In my work as both a therapist and life coach, I have come to realize that all people want to have meaning in their lives. We all–no matter our backgrounds or current state in life–want to have a life that is full of purpose and that matters. It is a universal desire of all humans. We want a life that is not a throw-away, that is seeking deeper levels of acknowledgement and contribution to humanity as a whole. I have worked in two jails and a psychiatric unit in my career. I have worked with heroin and cocaine addicted adults. These people, who have enormous challenges in their own individual lives, spoke of still making their mark in life, of realizing their potential, and of capturing the reason to be alive.
I believe that one way to find meaning in one’s life is found in practices such as mindfulness. Mindfulness is being in the present moment. Is all about putting your mind, body, and spirit in the here and now… without judging what’s happening… just accepting it. When we practice being more mindful, we settle in to a calm and a peace that is unlike anything else. It is a way of being that is able to accept all things without resisting against it or trying to numb difficult feelings. When we are in this place, on a regular basis, we can find meaning in our precious lives. We find what’s real and we touch what’s beautiful in the moment. We don’t have to seek anything, we just recognize the enormous gifts of life, our life. When we slow down and discontinue our constant striving, we find a level of goodness and understanding that is much deeper than anything we have experienced perhaps. Maybe a “Meaningful Life” is always available. Maybe it’s right here under the doing and busyness. Maybe it has always been here all along. I believe mindfulness offers a way to meaning. I believe mindfulness is available for all people. I believe that having meaning in one’s life is part of the key to a life filled with joy and peace.
No matter who you are or what you do or the challenges you face, there is a human need to find meaning in life. What will you do to find meaning? What is the meaning of your life?
