What would you try if you knew you could not fail?
In 2013 I embarked on a new path in my life… both professionally and personally. I completed a graduate program in Coaching and officially started my own Life Coaching business, Chart Your Course. I remember going to lunch with two of my fellow students and new friends at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) one Saturday as we all brainstormed names for our new businesses. We were so excited to really ‘start’…. not only our businesses but really the next chapter in our lives. I was scared I would fail… I was scared I would succeed… and I was scared of being judged by others. (“Who are you to say you can coach people?” is what I felt they’d say.) I always knew that it was my purpose to help people… and until coaching, I had not fully realized the importance of my role in this area. I viewed (and still do view) my relationship with my clients as a partnership… one founded in profound respect for my clients’ ability to realize and follow what’s really ‘right’ for them (not me!).
Three years later I am proud to say I have worked with and helped to empower hundreds of people through individual coaching, wellness workshops, meditation classes, public speaking engagements, and mentor coaching. I feel my work has immense meaning which adds greatly to my quality of life.
I have worked (and continue to work) with diverse populations of people. I find the single most common thread to be that everyone wants their lives to mean something. They want to feel good about their contribution to the world. This is therefore the underlying reason I do what I do, so that people can realize their purpose, their meaning, their reason for being.
I like to say that the genius in Coaching is found in this: the questions. I tell people that “I don’t have all the answers, but I definitely ask all the right questions!”
Never underestimate the value of a good question…it can profoundly shift how you think and therefore what you do.
So…what would you do if you knew you could not fail?
