The concept of ‘being grounded’ is found in all kinds of texts and studies and spiritual traditions. Essentially “being grounded” means feeling centered and super present. Energetically, it is being connected to the earth. We all have a sense of what this means.. to feel rooted and stable versus floating around without direction or with a sense of confusion. We understand that when we are “grounded” in this moment we are “here” vs. “there” (future or past). We are fully in our bodies, minds, and spirit–all together as one. We institute practices in our lives that create a grounding for us. This may be a morning ritual or a Sunday family dinner, events or experiences or ways of being that are consistent and expected. They are purposely the same and familiar. When we are grounded, we feel solid and good. When we are grounded, we can operate from a place of more assuredness and completeness. This felt sense of stability is essential for one to feel in balance in life.
When do we “fly?” Why do we want to “fly?” What does this mean in your own life? “Flying” is a metaphor for taking the leap in life. For creating something new or working towards a big goal. We are constantly striving to be in the “flow” of our lives; living in a way that feels effortless and deeply rewarding. At multiple points in our lives, we desire deep and meaningful change or the need to create something new. We want to be bold and live outside of the usual and the mundane. To “fly” is to live. To live in this way is to be the author of your life–to think and act and feel in a way that is liberating and wonderful.
Grounded in order to fly.
Do you need to be grounded in order to take-off? Aren’t these two diametrically opposed to one another? In your gut you know that they actually are not oxymorons, don’t you? When we anchor ourselves into what’s real, true and solid in our life (our rituals, close relationships, our purpose in life), then we feel safe to take risks and to push boundaries. We feel safe to go beyond the usual and the expected and to, in a sense, “fly.” Fly beyond expectations and routines. But being grounded in what is already good and right. What is already safe and secure.
When we feel grounded in our lives, we are no longer unsure about our choices and direction. We feel deeply connected to living a life of meaning and purpose. We can go out and fly and reach for the higher things our hearts desire knowing that we can always come home to ourselves. For when we are truly grounded, we know who we are and we can trust in the fact that we will be okay no matter what.
